Following a completely rudderless career in India for a few years, I ultimately  ended up becoming an Operator Theorist  thanks to my sojourn in the United States  and the support of  John  B  Conway. My first  mathematical  publication appeared when I was almost 33 years old. It was a pleasure to be the 13th PhD student of Conway and to be in the company of several younger students of his.
